Every autumn as the leaves begin to change,
thousands of Idahoans begin to focus on one
thing: heading to the back country to hunt. If
you are new to hunting, you must first complete
a hunter education course. Far too often, new
comers learn that they have waited too long to
sign up, and finding a class is difficult.
"Seating is limited and classes fill quickly,"
said Hunter Education and Recruitment Manager,
Brenda Beckley. "Get signed up in a course
early. Don't wait until fall."
By state law, Idahoans born on or after January
1, 1975 must attend and successfully complete a
hunter education course before purchasing an
Idaho hunting license or provide proof that they
held a valid hunting license in another state.
For aspiring young hunters, we recommend the
traditional instructor-led course. These classes
are taught over a two-week period by volunteer
instructors. Students must pass a written test
and the field exercise to certify. For teens and
adults, we recommend the online hunter education
course. The first part of the course is taken at
home and is concluded by attending a field day
where students must pass a field exercise and
written exam. Students must sign up for the
field day early.
Fish and Game recommends people start looking
for a course close to home as soon as they make
the decision to take their first hunting trip in
Idaho. Courses are available in all regions
throughout the spring and summer, and the
earlier people start thinking about signing up,
the better their chances of finding courses and
field days that are convenient for their
schedules. Those who go online to find a course
may find that scheduled field days in their
region are already full, but with a simple click
of the mouse, they will be able to sign up for
email alerts when additional field days are
scheduled. The key is to take action as soon as
