Badgers Advance to Championship Game, Add Three to All-League Team

May 9, 2014
The Bonners Ferry Badgers baseball team advanced to the district championship game by defeating the Priest River Spartans 6-1 in the first round of Intermountain League tournament play Thursday afternoon.

Lefty sophomore Vince Bennett went the distance, pitching a complete game to pick up the win. Bennett gave up one un-earned run on five hits, striking out eight, while only walking three.

Bennett was equally as impressive at the plate going 3-4 with two RBI’s. Caleb
Blackmore got the Badgers on the board with a two run single in the third inning.
Jesse Dunham and Shay Garcia also had good days at the plate picking up two hits each.

The Badgers scoring started in the third when Matt Gray led off the inning with a
single to left, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Matt Sabin. Dylan Unruh singled to
left then promptly stole second, setting the stage for Caleb Blackmore who delivered a two run single left. The Badgers scored three runs in the inning.

The Badgers were not done. In the fourth they added three more runs. Connor Bennett caught the Tigers third baseman off guard by dropping a drag bunt down the third baseline. Bennett advanced to second on a balk. Matt Gray advanced Bennett to third on a sacrifice bunt. Matt Sabin took one for the team, getting hit by the pitch, then stole second. With runners on second and third, Dylan Unruh knocked them in with a two run single. Unruh stole second and Jesse Dunham picked up an RBI with a single to left.

Coach Tom Turpin was pleased with how his team performed top to bottom.

Adding more good news to the team victory, three Badger players were named to the Intermountain All-League team. Congratulations to junior Shay Garcia, sophomore Vincent Bennett, and freshman Jesse Dunham for being selected to the All-League team.

Timberlake’s Austin Allen picked up the Intermountain League MVP trophy, while the Badgers Vincent Bennett tallied the second most points in the MVP voting.

The Badgers will be looking to knock off the number one seed Timberlake Tigers to bring home the league tournament trophy and earn a trip to the state tournament. The Tigers advanced to the championship game by defeating the Kellogg Wildcats 18-2 in their first round matchup.

The Badgers take on the Timberlake Tigers Saturday at 12:00 pm at Timberlake High School. In the event of a rainout, the game will be re-scheduled for Monday, time TBA.
