Badger boys tame the Wildcats

The Badger baseball team celebrated senior day in style by sweeping the Kellogg Wildcats on Saturday. Seniors Garrett Skeen, Mike Clarkson, Jesse Woods, Cade Umphenhour, Will Weir and Austin Hawks were all recognized between games.

In the first game, freshman Vince Bennett pitched a complete game, striking out 15 batters and walking only one to earn a 7-5 victory. Bennett gave up only five hits to the Wildcats.

Kellogg scored in the first inning after a base on balls and an error from the Badgers.

Bonners Ferry evened the score 1-1 after Cade Umphenhour walked and later scored on Garrett Skeen’s RBI single. Kellogg responded in the top of the fourth with three runs on four hits.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Badgers scored four runs with two outs.

After Mat Kramer walked and Jesse Woods reached on an error, Umphenhour hit a RBI single to score Kramer. Matt Gray reached on another Wildcat error, scoring Woods then Skeen hit a two run single, scoring Umphenhour and Gray.

Bonners Ferry added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the win.

Garrett Skeen went three for four with three RBIs in the game.

In the second game, senior Mike Clarkson took to the mound and struck out 10 while giving up only one walk in a 5-2 win.

Kellogg scored a run in the top of the first inning after the only walk reached base and later scored on an error from the Badger second baseman.

Bonners Ferry responded with three runs in the bottom of the first when Skeen led off with a double down the left field line. Connor Bennett and Clarkson both walked and all three scored on wild pitches.

The Badgers added a run in the second inning and sixth while the Wildcats could only muster one more run in the third to lose the second game of the double header.

Skeen and Clarkson both had two hits for the Badgers, including two double from Skeen.

Garrett Skeen finished the day five for eight at the plate. The win improves the Badgers record to 9 -8 overall and 3-3 in IML.
