Rae takes hard hit, jokes at practice

April 19, 2013
By Coach Lauren Bartoe

The Bonner's Ferry High School girls softball team traveled to Newport, Washington, for the first time in as long as anyone can remember on Thursday afternoon. With both teams fielding foreign exchange students and new players, it was sure to be a close match.

Senior Lindsay Taggart started the game for the Badgers on the mound while freshman Gabby Blackmore manned the plate. Newport's sister-duo stood out at third base and catcher, while their heavy hitting batters went to work. The Grizzlies jumped ahead 8-0 in the first three innings, but the Badgers battled back, scoring four runs in the third inning.

Stepping in to pitch, Junior Makenzie Carle finished the game strong, not allowing any more runs to score.

Bonners Ferry fought hard, getting the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh innings, but could only manage to get one more run across the plate, ending the game with a score of 5-8.

In the course of the game, while playing centerfield, Mariah Rae took a hard hit ball to the nose that ended up shattering the bridge of her nose in five pieces, and she still showed up at practice the following day.

She even joked that her choices of makeup for prom might be trendsetting! We are so proud to have her on our team.

Saturday, April 20, will be a home doubleheader against Kellogg starting at 11 a.m., and we will be honoring our seniors and foreign exchange students.

Softball will be honoring their players at the beginning of the first game at 11 a.m. and baseball will honor theirs in between their double header.
