Marva Maas, 83, passed away at her home in
Bonners Ferry on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 4:45
a.m. Graveside services will be held on
Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the
Porthill. Cemetery, Porthill, Idaho.
Marva was born on May 5, 1933 in Bonners Ferry,
Idaho to Charley B. “Tot” and Vonnie A. Smith.
Marva was raised on the family farm in Porthill
where she loved helping her father with the
daily chores on the farm. Marva attended grade
school in Porthill and high school in Bonners
Ferry.
After high school, Marva worked at the Ice Cream
Shop in Bonners Ferry where she met the love of
her life, Gerhart H. Maas. They were married on
November 1, 1952 and enjoyed 63 years together.
There were 4 children born to this union.
Marva continued her love for farm life by
raising beef cattle and pigs with her husband
Gerhart, on their farm on the Maas Loop Road.
You would often find Marva out in the fields
working side by side with Gerhart. She
especially loved watching the new baby calves
frolicking on the hillside beside their home.
While Marva’s children were still at home, she
was very active in the 4-H program. She was a
4-H livestock leader and served as Area 4-H
Leader for several years. Marva loved going to
the County Fair to watch the 4-H members show
and sell their animals.
Marva worked for Bonners Ferry Livestock Auction
as a cashier, Boundary Bounty School District as
a school bus driver and then in the catalog
department at the local JC Penney Store until
her retirement.
Over the years, Marva loved making beautiful
wedding and birthday cakes for family and
friends. She also enjoyed raising a large
garden, reading, and knitting winter scarves for
her family. But most of all, she loved spending
time with her children, grandchildren, and great
grandchildren. They were her greatest blessing
and brought her much love and joy!
Marva is survived by her loving husband,
Gerhart, daughter Tracie (Delton) Isaac, Sons
Marvin ”Spike” (Peggy) Maas, Russell (Cindy)
Maas, and Daughter-in-law Tracey Maas, 12
grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren, one
brother Mike Smith, On sister-in-law Sharon
Wiseman, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is
preceded in death by her parents, son William M.
Maas, and her sister and brother-in-law Cynthia
and Dee Lock.
In memory of Marva’s love of reading, the family
suggests that memorials be sent to 427 Baldy
Mountain Road, Moyie Springs, ID 83845. Funds
will be donated to the Boundary County Library
to purchase large print books in Marva’s
remembrance.
