Kathleen Marie Vickaryous
July 27, 1914 ~ October 4, 2015
October 6, 2015
Kathleen was born on July 27, 1914 to Samuel and Claire Schaller in Idman, Idaho near Dubois, and died October 4, 2015. Rosary at St. Ann's Church, Friday, October 9, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Ann's Church, October 10, 2015 at 10:00 a.m., followed by graveside service at Copeland Cemetery and Potluck Lunch (location to be announced).

Kathleen spent her early years with her parents on the Klockman ranch near Porthill. Sam was employed by A.K. Klockman in his haying operation. At this time, Kathleen found employment working as a cook's helper, cooking for the harvest crew, for a dollar a day. After living and working on the Klockman ranch, the family moved to the Round Prarie area, where Sam bought a small farm.

Around 1935, Kathleen's father was working on a valley ranch in District 10 and became acquainted with a young man by the name of Michael B. Vickaryous. They became close friends and Sam ended up taking Mike home with him to meet his daughters. Mike fell in love with Kathleen, and they married on December 7, 1936 in Saint Ann's Catholic Church in Bonners Ferry.

The two of them started farming in District 6 shortly thereafter, raising potatoes and children. They raised more potatoes than children, but still raised six children: Don, Pat, Mike, Jim, Bob and Kevin.

In 1942, Kathleen and Michael moved from Copeland and bought a small farm in the valley, on the Kootenai River's west side. There they raised grain and cattle, and finished raising their children. Michael remained on the ranch until his death in 1985, and Kathleen was able to stay on the ranch until June of 2014, when, at age 99, she moved to the nursing wing of the Boundary Community Hospital, where she received excellent care until her death.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband Michael, and sons Don and Mike, and several of her siblings. She is survived by one sister Esther (and John) Trople of Post Falls, Idaho, and one brother Fred (and Hazel) Schaller of Woodland, Washington, her daughter Patricia Smith of Hayden, Idaho, and sons James Vickaryous of Longview, Washington, Robert (and Mary) Vickaryous who live on the ranch, and Kevin (and Darby) Vickaryous of Castle Rock, Washington, and daughter-in-law Janet Vickaryous of Bonners Ferry, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Kay, as she was affectionately known, loved almost all aspects of farm life: gardening, canning and preserving what she grew, raising chickens, and serving meals to her family and any friend or neighbor who showed up. She had a great sense of humor and a way of always looking at the bright side of things, which served her, and those around her, well amid the challenges of her life. Others might have complained, but she thanked God for her many blessings. She will truly be missed by her family and many friends who loved her.
