Additional information released on shooting near Sandpoint hospital

The Bonner County Sheriff's Office has been designated as the lead agency in the investigation of the officer-involved shooting that took place near the hospital in Sandpoint on July 8. The Sheriff's Office has released additional information regarding the shooting, including the names of those involved.

According to the information made available by the Sheriff's Office, officers were summoned to Bonner General Hospital at approximately 9:00 p.m. after receiving a report of a weapons offense.

After the officer's arrival, a female suspect, Jeanette Riley, age 35, exited a white van on 3rd Street in front of the Emergency Room of the hospital.

According to Detective Sergeant Gary Johnston, "Riley, armed with a knife, engaged the officers. Riley was non-compliant, refused to stop her approach. she refused to drop the knife. As a result of Riley's action, officers used deadly force to stop the threat."

The Sheriff's Office identified the involved Sandpoint City police officers as: Officer S. Ziegler, who has been employed by Sandpoint City for 3 1/2 years; Officer M. Valenzuela, who has been employed by Sandpoint City for five years, and Officer Garrett Johnson, employed by Sandpoint City for 1 1/2 years.
