More flooding expected

March 8, 2014
The National Weather Service, Spokane, has issued a second areal flood watch as rains in the region intensify in the region. The advisory is in effect through 11 p.m. Sunday.

On Thursday, warming temperatures and rain caused problems throughout Boundary County, particularly Fleming Creek Road, which flooded and cut off several families. The road, which turns west off Highway 95 north of Smith Lake Road, remains closed.

Additional roads county wide were reported and some major sloughing occurred along the Union Pacific rail line in District 2, prompting UP to temporarily close the tracks. County Commissioners considered but rejected making an emergency declaration as the situation was by then improving.

Under the latest advisory, the National Weather Service predicts from half to an inch of rain in the valleys and more than an inch in the mountains today and Sunday. With already saturated soils throughout the area, especially at higher elevations, runoff could be considerable and rapid.

Road closures, mud and rock slides and lowland flooding can be expected, along with stormwater flooding in urban areas.

Motorists are advised not to attempt crossing water-covered roads, especially at stream crossings, where currents can be strong. Area residents are encouraged to take steps to protect property against flood damage. The county has sandbags and sand available.

Those experiencing non-life-threatening flood problems in Boundary County should call the sheriff's office at (208) 267-3151, extension 0; if an emergency exists, call 911.
