Fire destroys Troy apartments

December 13, 2013
A fire destroyed the Pine Tree Plaza apartment complex in Troy, Montana, late Wednesday evening, sending one man to the Utah Burn Center in Salt Lake City and left 14 people, one a child and one expecting a baby girl in the next month or so, homeless and without any belongings.

The inured man, former firefighter Eric Howe, suffered second and third-degree burns on his back and head protecting his three-year-old son from the flames as they evacuated. He is expected to make a full recovery.

A woman working at the Town Pump spotted the fire at W106 Missoula Avenue and called 911 and Troy firefighters and police worked long into Thursday controlling the blaze, believed to have been started by a Christmas tree.

The Troy dispatch center put out a thank you on Facebook today to all the responders, local businesses and private citizens who helped, not only in fighting the fire, but in providing places for the displaced residents to go.

"It warms my heart to know we live in such a wonderful community," the author wrote.

The Troy Community Baptist Church is organizing donations for the victims, who range in age from three to 50 and need everything from clothes to furniture to household and personal care items.

Those with items to donate are asked to take them to the back building at the church, located at E725 Missoula Avenue. To find out how you can help, call the church at (406) 295-4206.
