Kathy Hampton Teacher of the Month

December 11, 2013
By Principal Steven Morton

Every student looks forward to second grade at Naples Elementary and misses it when they graduate – and for good reason. Kathy Hampton has been teaching for 22 years – with the majority of those at Naples School.

She is the consummate professional, and is still challenging herself to get better each day. She is Boundary County School District 101's October Certified Employee of the Month.

In her class children experience a wide range of events and happenings.

Students adopt a beanie baby and journal the adventures, bringing tears at years end. Not to mention the Grand Mother’s Day Tea for students and their mothers.

The holidays include the yearly food collection for the food bank, the penny collection for a family's Secret Santa, and the annual gingerbread house building at Christmas. Not to mention the amazing Thanksgiving Feast that Pilgrims and Indians put on for their families with stories of old.

Do you like to dance? Students in second grade learn while dancing with Mrs. Hampton in the lead. She never stops dancing, especially if it is the Beach Boys!

Want a new skill? Mrs. Hampton teaches HATS classes about crocheting and yoga and can even help you bake an apple pie.

Do you like animals? Each second grade student will raise a mealy worm into a moth while graphing its growth. Daily use of the smart board brings up science information and daily pictures of animals and unusual events. All this while you hear squeaking from the room as the guinea pigs want to be held.

The hallway is filled with poems, riddles, stories and pictures that the second grade hangs often. This includes the kindness board that is filled with second grade helpers who are being taught the value of assisting others and recognizing those who help them.

Second grade anyone? It is never too late to have a wonderful second grade.

Kathy welcomes all!
