Citing family obligations and medical needs not easily available in Boundary County, Bonners Ferry Police Chief Steve Benkula on November 21 tendered his resignation to Mayor David Anderson, effective December 6.

"When I was appointed Chief of Police with the Bonners Ferry Police Department it was, and still is, an honor," Benkula wrote. "The community welcomed me and I appreciate the support that my family and I have been given. The police department has had some challenges but we have a great group of officers dedicated to the citizens of Bonners Ferry."

Benkula, a 28-year law enforcement veteran, was hired by the city in April, 2012.

He has accepted a position with the Idaho Attorney General's Office and will move with his family to Treasure Valley.

"Please know that the challenges that we have faced was in no way a factor in my decision," he wrote. "This was not easy for me. It has been challenging but rewarding and I am proud to have been a part of the great City of Bonners Ferry team. I appreciate the opportunity that has been given to me."
