Safeway gives to cancer prevention program

“On behalf of everyone at Safeway and all our generous and loyal customers, we thank you for the opportunity to make a difference in our united quest to bring an end to breast cancer," wrote Brian Kingsbury, Spokane District Manager, Safeway Inc., Northwest Division, in a letter received in January, 2013.

Along with the letter of support for the Breast Cancer Awareness Early Detection Fall Campaign was a check for $5,500.

Over the years, many customers have given the change from their grocery purchases to one good cause or another.

Gina Musso, Bonners Ferry Safeway Manager, is very excited that our community has been the recipient of a portion of the breast cancer fund.

“The credit for this funding goes to our customers,” Musso insisted. “They are the ones who gave it.”

“Safeway’s local support is so appreciated,” said Marcia Morman, Boundary Community Hospital Community Relations Coordinator. “In a small community like ours, funding is very limited. This gift from Safeway will help in many ways, including and foremost in encouraging women to schedule their annual mammogram.

"I have been researching the history of breast cancer detection and am writing an extensive article about the handful of early scientists who conducted breast cancer detection research. It is fascinating to see the progress in radiology and the detection of cancers. The early researchers would be blown away with our new digital mammography equipment.

"However, it doesn’t matter how sophisticated the equipment, nor the high-level of expertise of our radiology department, if women don’t come and have an exam.

"That’s why I am so thankful for this gift from Safeway. It helps us in our promotional efforts to get our women in for a mammography screening.”

In addition, some of the funds from Safeway’s gift are being distributed to our local cancer support group for those who need to travel outside the community for cancer treatments.

Boundary Community Hospital continues to offer 25% off mammogram screenings through November 15. Call (208) 267-3141 extension 4258.

Panhandle Health (208) 267-5558 and Boundary Community Clinics (208) 267-2086, have free vouchers for women meeting the criteria.
