Congratulations to Valley View Elementary for being awarded the $5,000 School Library Access Grant from the Idaho Commission for Libraries’ Read to Me program.

Thanks to Valley View librarians Julie Colson and Patty Burlingame and the Idaho Reads! VISTA, Debbie Pauls, for pursuing this funding and being awarded. The grant was submitted last spring and VV was awarded the full grant amount of $5000 this fall.

The purpose of this grant is to help increase access to print for our youngest students. Reading done in the home is the single most important factor in developing children’s literacy skills. Children should be reading or being read to at least 20 minutes each day.

Funds from this grant are being used to purchase books to help ensure that access of reading materials start from the beginning of children’s schooling. The goals of the grant are: to increase the amount of reading done in homes; increase the access of quality non-fiction and fiction titles in school libraries; and increase the number of children reading at grade level.

Valley View has purchased close to 300 new “Library Bound” books for their school library, for ages Pre-K through firstst grade. All students at Valley View are encouraged to check out books to take home.

Parents are also welcomed and encouraged to visit the school library and check out books to take home to read and read to their children. The new books are displayed in an area that captures the interest and attention of the younger students.
