Boundary County has its own Breast Cancer
Awareness Early Detection T-shirt.
“The t-shirt was fun to design,” said Marcia
Morman, Boundary County Hospital’s Community
Relations Coordinator. “I chose the butterfly as
the perfect representation of freedom from fear.
With new technology in digital mammography,
women who have an annual mammogram have much
more assurance than in the past of cancer
detection.
“The pink, of course, represents woman. Men do
get breast cancer, but it is not a common
occurrence. Women, on the other hand, have an
extremely high rate of breast cancer. According
to the American Cancer Society, one out of eight
women will get breast cancer in their lifetime.
The words ‘early detection can save your life,'
is the heart of the hospital’s message. That’s
what it’s all about.”
The t-shirts sell for $6.50, which is what the
hospital pays for the shirt and the
screen-printing. The hospital sold 330 t-shirts
last year. Business owners and staff all over
town, both men and women, wore the t-shirt in a
show of solidarity to encourage women to
schedule their annual mammogram.
Anyone visiting town three days prior to the
Mayoral Proclamation of Breast Cancer Awareness
Early Detection Day last year witnessed the sea
of pink.
Restaurant servers and cooks, grocery store
checkers, hairdressers, bank tellers, athletic
club instructors, medical office staff and many
more wore pink.
This year’s Mayoral Proclamation will be at noon
Wednesday, October 30, at Georgia Mae Plaza on
Main Street in downtown Bonners Ferry. To read

“We are looking forward to even more
participation this year,” said Morman. “I will
be going from business to business with the
t-shirts this week, but if I don’t make it to
your business, please call us for a t-shirt. The
t-shirts are for everyone, not just those in
business. They can be purchased at the
Outpatient Clinic at the hospital, or directly
from me. Remember that all mammograms at
Boundary Community Hospital are 25% off now thru
November 15. There are also free mammogram
vouchers for those who meet the qualifications
offered by Panhandle Health and Boundary
Community Clinics.”
