Tort filed against school district

September 11, 2013
Boundary County School District 101 was notified September 6 of a tort claim seeking $250,000 in damages by a local family contending wrongful suspension from Bonners Ferry High School last March in relation to a bomb threat.

Bobby, Heidi and Chase Invernon contend that Chase was improperly suspended for allegedly making a bomb threat with non-existent evidence. The complainants allege that despite request, their attorney was not advised of an expulsion hearing April 11, when Chase was expelled for "conduct, in the judgment of the board, is such as to be continuously disruptive of school discipline or the instructional effectiveness of the school."

The family alleges that there was no mention made related to bomb threats, though both former Bonners Ferry High School Principal Kirk Hoff and superintendent Dick Conley asserted that the suspension and expulsion would be for bomb threats at the school.

The family asserts that since the allegations, Chase has been subjected to violence, and that he and his parents have lost income, wages, enjoyment of life, mental suffering, emotional pain and loss of reputation in the community.

In addition to family members, the tort claim names participation in the alleged wrongful acts by Conley, Hoff, former trustee Gil Hagen, new high school principal Tim Gering, Teresa Mulvaney, Ed DePriest, former trustee Lisa Dirks, Steve Morton, trustee David Brinkman, incoming trustees Mike Weland and Beverly Krichbaum, trustee Melanie Staples, Jerry Jiminez and Conrad Garner.
