Young pilots shine at Northern Air

July 17, 2012

By Ashley Glaza

The Huckleberry Pancake Breakfasts hosted by the EAA flying club are working for local youth. Dalin Hubbard, age 19 of Bonner Ferry, took his first solo flight on July 9.

Dalin is one of the 2013 EAA Flight Scholarship recipients. He started his pilot training in January by attending the Private Pilot Ground School held at Northern Air. He passed his private pilot knowledge exam and immediately started his flight training on June 17.

His dedication to flying two times a day, twice a week, has paid off and he has passed his second big hurdle in under a month, which was his first solo flight.

In the next phase of his training, he will learn about cross-country and night flying.

Joel Cook
Joel Cook, of Creston, BC, earned his high performance/complex rating on June 27, a requirement to competently fly the Piper Comanche, which he used to pass his Commercial Pilot exam on Saturday, July 13.

Joel has been a dedicated student at Northern Air since 2009, earning his Private Pilot certificate in 2010, his instrument rating in 2011, and now his commercial license.

In, addition, Joel also earned his float plane rating in Canada and plans to become a bush pilot in northern Canada as soon as he can find a position.

Jeremy Belford-Cave, of Australia, earned his tailwheel endorsement on July 10.

Like Joel Cook, Jeremy has been a dedicated student at Northern Air for the past several years.

Jeremy Belford-Cave
Flight training in Australia is extremely expensive and restrictive, so he researched flight schools in the United States and came up with Northern Air.

In 2011, Jeremy earned his Private Pilot License and Instrument Rating.

He returned in the summer of 2012 to get some more flight experience. This year he is building time towards his Commercial License.

He is currently on a cross country flight to Minnesota to visit friends.

Danley Bistline, Williston, North Dakota, came back to his hometown of Bonners Ferry to earn his High Performance/Complex rating in the Piper Comanche on July 12.

Danley Bistline
Danley, along with instructor Nathaniel Cheshire, put in two days of intense flying, including a trip to Cutbank and Missoula, Montana, to earn his advanced rating before heading back to work in North Dakota.

Duane Owens, of Spirit Lake, Idaho, earned his tailwheel endorsement on July 13 with instructor Wayne Sommers. Duane recently earned his private pilot license out of Spokane.

Paul Matejovsky has taken his first solo flight.

It was actually his second solo flight, but the last time was over two years ago, and life got busy and he never had the opportunity to finish his training.

He is hard at it again with instructor Jeff Pedersen and on July 13 he experienced the thrill of solo flight all over again.

Rick and Kim Peterson
On July 15, Rick Peterson, Northern Air’s newest pilot as of June 27, purchased his first airplane – a Maule MT-7, 235 HP tricycle gear, with short take-off and landing capability. Rick spent the afternoon and evening getting a check out in his new plane by instructor Jeff Pedersen, and practicing his skills in his new bird.

Northern Air would like to congratulate all the new pilots and hard-working students on their successes. Also, thank you to all the participants of the Huckleberry Pancake Breakfasts who generously contribute to the scholarship funds that introduce our local youth to the joys and rewards of aviation.

Remember to stop by the airport on Saturday, July 27, for the third Huckleberry Pancake Breakfast of the season, and to bring your kids (ages 8-18) to the Young Eagles free flight day on August 10.
