Commissioners to decide on August mud bog

May 18, 2013
Boundary County Commissioners will hold public hearing at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, in the extension office meeting room to consider an application for a one-time special event; a three day mud bog/rock crawl August 9-11 at 3096 Highland Flats Road.

Proposed by DelRey Romero, the event, if approved will take place on two parcels he owns totaling 72.4 acres and be a non-competitive event going on from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. all three days. In his application, Romero said he spoke with all surrounding property owners, and the only concern expressed was over the potential for trespassing; he said he will have security teams on hand around the clock for the duration to prevent that from happening.

He said no alcohol will be served and that public safety would be a primary concern, with staging areas set up for fire and ambulance personnel. He estimates the daily traffic count to be between 100 and 500 vehicles, and said that if approved, 15-percent of the proceeds would be donated to Bonners Ferry High School.

Based on written response, the application is strongly opposed; only one letter, unsigned, was submitted in support; 17 were submitted against the idea, most citing noise, dust, traffic and the general rowdiness associated with such an event.
