Eastport flooding likely

May 13, 2013
Boundary County Emergency Management Incident Commander Bob Graham spent much of his morning along the banks of the Moyie River near Eastport this morning, and said some could see problems with flooding.

"It's already over the banks in some areas," he said. "With the rain expected tonight, we could see problems."

Libby Dam will decrease outflow over a two hour period beginning at 5 p.m. today, from 26 kcfs to 21, but the Kootenai River is high from increased water releases started Saturday to attempt to induce sturgeon to spawn, leaving little room for outflow from the Moyie River.

As of this morning, the Moyie River was six inches below flood stage of nine feet.

Property owners in areas susceptible to flooding, including those in the Addie area, are encouraged to take steps to protect property from flooding.

Sandbags are available for free at Boundary County Road and Bridge, and sand is available at the county landfill.

If threatened by flood, call the sheriff's office at (208) 267-3151, extension 0.
