Serve Idaho offers grants

Idaho nonprofit, educational, labor, community and faith-based organizations, Indian tribes and local governments are eligible for special federal funding through the Schools Turnaround AmeriCorps program to improve student performance.

Serve Idaho, the Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism, announced that interested organizations have until April 15 to file applications for the grants that will range from $16,000 to $80,000 for fixed amount education awards and $250,000 to $1 million for cost reimbursement grants. The grants would run for three years.

A notice of intent to apply for a grant must be filed by 5 p.m. March 28. A technical assistance call will be held March 25 at 10 a.m.

The Corporation for National and Community Service and the U.S. Department of Education expect to have up to $5 million to award under the program that fosters family and community engagement in education, enhance school safety and discipline as well as other nonacademic factors, accelerate student learning in reading and mathematics, increase graduation rates and college enrollment and encourage increased learning time.

“This program is a commitment to support schools and communities in improving student performance, especially by providing more opportunities for children in disadvantaged communities,” Renee Cox, Serve Idaho program manager, said.

School Turnaround AmeriCorps coordinates with local school and local education agencies under School Improvement Grants and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and expands on the efforts of Together for Tomorrow, a cooperative initiative with the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships to boost community engagement in turning around the nation's lowest-performing schools.
