You Were There

There was someone there to feed me,
when I couldn’t hold my spoon
A tender voice to calm my fears
when darkness filled my room,
There was a gentle someone waiting near
and helping me to stand
And when I’d start to fall
there’d be that reassuring hand
I’d get my shirt on backward
and the tag was in the front
Someone would turn it all around
and act like it was fun
And someone knew when I was scared
and needed their embrace
They didn’t mind my runny nose,
or the teardrops on my face
You were there for me
I wasn’t strong enough to make it on my own
You were there for me
I couldn’t navigate the future all alone
You gave all you had to give to make my life
complete
Now looking back on yesterday,
the memories are so sweet
You were there for me ...
you were always there for me.
The pages and the chapters
seem to come and go too fast
Now I’m standing by the “someone”
that stood by me in the past
And I’m feeling like it’s my turn
to repay the simple debt
For ALL you’ve done for me,
Lord how could I forget!
So, I’ll be there to feed you
when you just can’t hold your spoon
I’ll do my best to calm your fears
when darkness fills the room,
I’ll be that gentle someone
waiting near to help you stand
And when you fall,
I’ll be right there to lend a helping hand
I’ll help you when your clothes aren’t right,
and make it out a game
And make sure that you know
how much I love you just the same
And when the fear takes over
and the tears run down your face,
I’ll be there just to hold you
in a loving, warm embrace
I’ll be there for you
When you’re not strong enough to make it on your
own
I’ll be there for you
In your sunset years, you won’t be all alone
I’ll give all I have to give,
to make the moments sweet
So when I look back on today,
the circle is complete
You were there for me ...
and I’ll be – there for you!
