Commissioners see long spring breakup

March 15, 2011

County Commissioners on Monday released a letter on the severity of this spring season , and with most county roads closed to hauling, promised strict enforcement of the closures.

"This is shaping up to be an unusually hard spring season for Boundary County roads," commissioners wrote. "We are experiencing serious frost heaving and saturation of the structural layer of our roads. The forecast for the next several weeks is for warming conditions, day and night. As a result of this, most of our roads will be closed to hauling by this evening.

"For the next few weeks, most "essential hauling permits" for reduced loads will only be issued on a single trip basis and only in the case of verifiable emergencies where public health and safety is endangered and/or where there is immenent threat of significant damage to property.

"None of us need additional taxes or expenses levied upon us and these roads are extremely expensive to repair or rebuild. Both criminal and civil penalties can be levied for violations of road restrictions and closures. Expect enforcement of these rules as we would be remiss in our duty to the majority of Boundary County residents and taxpayers to do otherwise."

A full and updated list of road closures is available on the Boundary County website, www.boundarycountyid.org.
