BFHS Cross Country performs well in first meet of season
August 29, 2018
by Tyler Warner
BFHS Varsity Cross Country Coach

We had our first meet last Saturday and it was a pretty good one! Air quality hovered just a few points below the acceptable threshold, so we didn't have to cancel. Libby had to cancel their meet the day before, but because they still wanted a meet they came over to us at the last moment. Luckily my finish line crew and volunteers were very flexible and we were able to accomodate both Libby and Thompson Falls joining us in addition to previously scheduled Priest River and Kellogg, making for five teams total.

The course was 5k (3.11 miles) and this Cross Country event was held at the high school.

We had two races starting at 9:00 a.m.. The Girls' race was highlighted by Abby Gorton (BFHS, Junior) winning the girls race with a time of 20:43. Second place, Josie Neesvig (Sophomore, Thompson Falls) finished in 21:55. Also finishing top 10 for Bonners was Senior Emily Gorino who ran a 25:58. In team scoring there were three complete teams. Thompson Falls was 3rd with 48 points, Bonners Ferry 2nd with 41 points, and Priest River 1st with 31 points.

The Boys' race had five Badgers in the top ten starting with 3rd place Hunter Smith (Junior) in 18:47, 4th Place Sam Gorton (Senior) in 19:12, 5th place Austin Donn (Junior) in 19:31, 8th Place Ty Grigg (Sophomore) in 20:40, and 9th place Duncan McKechnie (sophomore) in 20:55. In team scoring there were also three complete teams. Kellogg was 3rd with 53 points, Priest River second with 41 points, and Bonners Ferry was the meet champions with a score of 29.

As for notes, Abby Gorton led the girls race pretty much from the start and it was never really close. She kept her pace up well and never relinquished the distance she gained. We are also missing a few girls who have not had enough practices, but once practices are completed the girls team will only get better. Same situation for the boys, Conner Alexander (Freshman) would have finished right behind Austin Donn if he had been eligible for scoring.
