Badger boys edge Lake City JV

The Bonners Ferry boys varsity basketball team opened their season with an overtime win at home Monday, downing the Lake City JV squad 49-45. The girls opened their season on the road in Coeur d'Alene to take on Lake City JV, but fell, 46-56.

On the boys side, the Badgers outpaced the Timberwolves in the opening quarter13-8, but Lake City fired back in the second quarter, outshooting the Badgers 12-4, to go into the locker room ahead by three, 20-17.

The game stayed close in the third, with the Badgers leading in the quarter 12-8 to go into the final quarter up by a point, 29-28, and the two teams fought to a draw, 37-37, at the final buzzer, sending the game into overtime.

The Badgers had a repeat of the third quarter, outshooting the Timberwolves 12-8 in OT to claim the victory.

Seniors Garrett Skeen and Evan Moe led the scoring for the Badgers, each with 13 points. Ryan Farrens shot for eight points, Cameron Woods seven and Cameron Fitch added five.

On the girls side, Jasmine Hill led the Badger effort with 16 points, but the Timberwolves led in every quarter except the fourth, and it was too late to close the gap.

The Badgers trailed by a single bucket at the end of the first quarter, 11-13, and Lake City eased ahead in the second to go ahead 29-23 at the half.

The Timberwolves had their best quarter of the game in the third, outscoring the Badgers 19-12 to go into the final quarter up by 13, 48-35. The Badgers outshot Lake City 11-8 in the final quarter, but fell by 10, 56-46.

Savannah Woods broke double digits with 10 points, Abby Skeen added seven, Aubree Wasmer 6, Kendra Merritt put up five and Jailee Foster added two to round out the Badger scoring effort.

Both teams are on the road tonight taking on Coeur d'Alene Charter; on Saturday the two teams host Lakeland, with the girls varsity taking the floor at 4:15 p.m., the boys varsity game starts at 6:30 p.m.
