Badger girls wrap tough season

October 29, 2012
It was a frustrating season for the Badger varsity volleyball team, scoring two wins in their first three matches, including what would be their only league win of the season, then hitting a winless streak that lasted until their final regular season game against Clark Fork, and that one took five sets to sew up.

Their season ended in similar fashion, when they fell to Priest River, the team with the best regular season record in the Intermountain League at 6-1, and then went two and out against Kellogg, the league's tail end, who hadn't won a league game during the regular season.

The Badgers opened district play against the Spartans on Tuesday, October 16, falling 14-25, 11-25, 16-25. In that match, McKenzie McDonald totted three kills, Savannah Woods made four assists, Camille Awbrey had one ace and a block and Desirae Minor, who, along with Allyson Merrifield earned spots on the All-IML team, came in with six digs.

On Thursdays, the Badgers played to heartbreak in a loser out match with Kellogg, staying right up with the Wildcats but not able to close and finish off their opponent.

Kellogg avenged their early season loss to the Badgers, 23-25, 26-28, 15-25, to move on, only to fall to Priest River.

Kendra Merritt had two blocks, Jailee Foster nine digs, Merrifield scored two ace serves, Jasmin Hill had five kills, Emma Kelly had six assists and Woods came through with seven assists.

In the league title game, Timberlake defeated Priest River; at state, the Tigers went two and out, falling to Sugar Salem and Snake River.

Priest River taking the league's second slot, defeated Buhl, Shelley and Kimberly, falling to Fruitland to face Fruitland in the state championship game. Fruitland took the state title, winning 25-18, 25-19, 25-17, giving Priest River second.
