Badgers gearing up for football

June 22, 2012
By Coach Don Alt

Earlier this spring, Casey McLaughlin was hired as head football coach for Bonners Ferry High School. Coach McLaughlin hired Troy Holt as assistant head coach, Corey Kramer and myself as assistant coaches.

Also helping out are volunteer assistants Matt Smith, Corey Richards and Jay Trocke.

Earlier, Coach McLaughlin started “Spring Football” at Bonners Ferry High School. Spring football in Idaho is allowed after the spring state championships in track, golf, baseball and softball. It includes preparation for summer football camps and provides a way to work with players to improve skills.

This is a great way of introducing new ideas and concepts that a coach wants to add to any football program.

Spring football practice started May 30 and continued for 11 days after school. Practices consisted of learning techniques, using drills to practice those techniques and only two days of full contact football. This all led up a three day football camp at Montana University Western in Dillon, Montana.

On June 14, Badger football started three days of football, football and football.

Thirty-one players went to football camp from Bonners Ferry. Days consisted of football instruction from the Western Montana coaches and players, working with our team to get us ready to play against other schools.

The teams at the camp included St. Maries, Salmon, Kimberley and Bonners Ferry from Idaho and Florence, Hamilton, Frenchtown, Libby, Stevensville and Ronan from Montana. This was a good test and a great learning experience for all the players who attended camp.

There were four teams, including Bonners Ferry, that brought freshman and sophomores to play junior varsity games.

Summer conditioning continues through the summer with weight room and speed training on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with seven on seven every Thursday.

Football practices start Monday, August 5, with the first game Saturday, August 25 at Libby, Montana.
