Badger boys district cross-country champions

October 29, 2011
The Badger girls cross country team earned third agt the district meet October 20 at Priest River's Ranch Club Golf Course. The boys won district and Intermountain League titles and advanced to the state championship meet, being held today in Boise.

Most of the girls, led by junior Aimee Sayers, managed to run personal bestsw on the hilly golf course last Thursday.

"The peaked at the right time, and they ran well," said coach Paul Bonnell. "I was pleased with the individual and team effort, even if the results weren't what the girls had hoped for."

Seniors Katy Hiatt and Katrina Svec bested their personal records by several seconds over five kilometers. Lily York and Jordan Merz, Bonnell said, ran gutsy, challenging races to finish in the number two and three spots on the varsity team.

"Sayers, York and Merz are already motivated for next season," Bonnell said.

Nonnie Stofiel, who had just set a personal best at the Coeur d'Alene Charter small schools meet, and Elise Couplet rounded out the varisty girls. Couplet and Marie Chary ran personal bests in what is their first year of running.

In the boy's race, the Badgers realized what they've been striving for all season, a district title and the chance to race against some of the best teams in the state.

Led by Micah Krmpotich, who won at 16:26, and Jacob Callister, who came in second at 16:38, the boys literally ran away with first place, as Luke Reoch finished finished fifth and Jacob Perkins came in 10th. The rest of the varsity seven, Bradley Thompson, Tyson Boorman and Jake Stimmel, came in at 11th, 12th and 13th, respectively.

"The whole varsity crew came in under 18:10," Bonnell said.

"Jacob Perkins is only a freshman," district champion Micah Krmpotich said. "He's running faster than I did then."

Personal bests were set all through the boy's crew, from Reoch, Perkins and Boorman to Alec Perkins, Josh Dufrene and Jared Lysne.

"It was exciting to see so many Badger jerseys, and so many individual efforts," Bonnell said.
