The second-annual MWBA Scramble went off without
a hitch! This year's recipient to recieve the
donation brought about by support of the golfers
in this community is the Boundary County Fair
Board, who used the $2,100 raised to replace the
lights in the arena, a much needed improvement
that benefits many organizations and events, and
something Mountain West Bank and Boundary
Abstract wanted to be part of.
Team sponsors for this year's event were Flory
Forestry, Boundary Abstract, Mountain West Bank,
Shelman Realty, the Kootenai Tribe, Boundary
Tractor and Maggie Logging, along with several
individuals who put their own teams together.
There were nine teams in the tournament, held
August 26, and a total of 36 duffers.
Businesses that showed support by posting signs
along the course at Mirror Lake were Maggi
Logging, Wells Fargo, Pace Kerby, Coldwell
Banker Resort Realty, Century 21, Mountain West
Bank, Boundary Abstract, the Bread Basket, First
American Title and Community Title.
Several other businesses showed their support by
donating items sold during the silent auction,
including the Gift Gallery, Far North
Outfitters, Boundary Abstract, Mountain West
Bank, the Kootenai River Inn and Spa, Alley
Fabric Nook, the Bamboo Room Day Spa, Columbia
Tractor, Wilson Law Firm, Boundary Tractor and
the Kootenai River Brewing Company.
Riverside Auto offered a skilled or lucky duffer
$15,000 toward the purchase of a new car if they
could land a hole in one on the eighth green ...
with Patti Branson, manager of Mountain West
Bank, and Kristina Sholten, the Spa at the
Kootenai River Inn standing eagle-eyed to judge,
none of the golfers managed the feat, but Wendy
Hawks, a manager at Riverside Auto and one of
the competing duffers, was on hand to lead
anyone who may have pulled it off right to the
new car lot to help them pick out and drive home
their prize.
Wendy, by the way, was playing on the Flory
Forestry team.
Tim Wilson handled the emcee honors, and was
privileged to hand out this year's awards.
First place honors went to Jamie Porter,
Jennifer Porter, J.R. Porter and Mike Halford,
the Kootenai Tribe team, who won an insulated
cooler and a golf towel from Boundary Abstract,
18 holes of golf at the Riondel Golf Course in
Creston, B.C., a zipper bag, tees and a golf
tool kit from Mountain West Bank, and a sleeve
of golf balls from Mirror Lake Golf Course.
Cal Russell, Brion Poston, Kyle Young and Steve
Howeltt, the Boundary Tractor/Yamaha team, took
second, winning a zipper bag, tees and golf tool
kit from Mountain West Bank, a golf towel from
Boundary Abstract, a sleeve of golf balls from
Mirror Lake, and a family gift certificate to
AJ's Bowling Alley for pizza, pop and bowling
for four.
Though she came in on the third-place team,
Gerry Ann Howlett had an incredible day on the
links, taking a $15 gift certificate to Mugsy's
for the longest drive along with Jamie Porter,
and taking another $15 gift certificate to the
Kootenai River Brewing Company, along with Mike
Halford, for swatting the ball closest to the
hole.
Along with Gerry on the third place team were
Kevin Larson, Stan Pruitt and Steve Nelson, and
they took hom the zipper bag and tees from
Mountain West Bank, a golf towel from Boundary
Abstract, a sleeve of golf balls from Mirror
lake and gift certificates to the Springs
Restaurant and Lounge at the Kootenai River Inn
and one to Larson's.
Pam Moe won the Mulligan drawing, winning a
basket of beer glasses and a selection of
premium ales to pour in them. For those not
familiar with the Mulligan ... it's a do-over
shot you have to pay $5 for!
As I brought the silent auction to a close, it
was fun to see a bunch of people still running
around to make their final bids, as wars broke
out over who was going to end up with what!
Patti Nelson and Mike Halford did battle over a
beautiful silver necklace donated by Janya
Ritchie, and we're not sure if chivalry or
perseverance won, as Patti proudly walked away,
her neck adorned.
It was one of the more tame fights, as not an
auction item went unchallenged.
The success of the event can't be credited to
one business, group or sponsor, as everyone who
took part deserves credit, and it appears that
everyone who took part had a great time.
