Lawn mower races coming June 4

May 21, 2011
The sixth-annual Pass in the Grass lawn mower race hits the outdoor arena at the Boundary County Fairgrounds at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 4, and everyone is invited to either participate or come watch.

The county fair board has been putting on the race since June, 2006, helping to raise funds for the fair and for fairgrounds improvements.

What started out with a dozen participants has now grown into one of the largest lawn mower races in the northwest, with over 40 races coming in from Idaho, Washington and Montana to compete, some from more than 500 miles away!

These aren't your typical riding mowers, though ... though there is a division for them. The stars of the show are highly modified to travel up to 50-miles-per-hour. The super stock class is the most economical, just take off the mower deck and add a kill switch. Nex is the modified class, which allows you to lower mower to six inches above the ground, keeping the stock engine.

The open class is the fastest and most expensive class, allowing you to build whatever you like provided you start out with a lawn mower engine.

This year, as many as 50 racers are expected to compete, and some of our local racers have been gearing up to compete since last year's race.

So make plans for a fun Saturday! After the Rod Benders Car Show, head to the fairgrounds to watch some of the fastest lawn mowers on the planet and some awesome competition!

To find out more about competing, call the fair office, (208) 267-7041.

Tickets to the Pass in the Grass lawn mower races are $5 for ages 11 and over, $3 for kids ten and under and kids five years old and younger get in free.

Thanks go out to this year's sponsors; JBs Tire and Automotive, Atkins Harvest Foods, Huckleberry Variety, Bonners Ferry Glass, McCoy's Home Interior and Redneck Racing.
