Bonners Ferry Swish merges with Rotary

April 5, 2011
Rotary members warming up for a game at last year's Bonners Ferry Swish tournament. This year, they'll be helping organize it.
At this morning's Bonners Ferry Rotary board meeting, a merger between Bonners Ferry Swish and the Rotary was formalized, and it will be the Rotary, with secretary Ron Sukenik serving as chair, who will be behind the organization of the region's biggest three-on-three basketball tournament, behind Spokane's Hoop Fest.

This year marks the fourth annual Bonners Ferry Swish tournament, and the previous chairs, Brett Brown and Brad Holifield, can attest to what a big undertaking organizing the event is. Growing bigger each year, the event drew more than 300 players from around the region last year, and this year's event, taking place on Main Street in down town Bonners Ferry July 16-17, is expected to draw even more. In addition, more than 1,000 spectators lined the street, cheering on their team.

In addition to the hoops action, there are also a number of organizations that come in to provide food, entertainment and fun.

The one thing the event needs more than anything is volunteers; referees, scorers, time keepers, court monitors and more.

Thankfully, Ron is starting out with the full support of all members of the Bonners Ferry Rotary Club, including the very capable Colet Allen, who is helping with the logistics. If you'd like to play, register a team, volunteer, donate or get involved in any way, give her a call at (208) 267-8130 and leave a message, or shoot her an email to colet@meadowcrk.com.
