Rotary awards scholarships

The Bonners Ferry Rotary Club handed out a
baker's dozen scholarships worth $7,600 to
deserving high school students during their
meeting May 12.
Among 27 highly-qualified applicants, 12
students were presented $500 scholarships and
one, Sara Owinyo, was awarded the $1,000 Amy
Farrell Scholarship.
Recieving $500 scholarships were Markayle
Accord, Clarena Branscum, Taylor Dinning, Trevor
Hampton, Ben Heart, Moriah Jantz, Lorena
LaBarbera, Hannah Northrup, Isabella Orr, Brooke
Roney, Tana Sue Schneider and Tony Shope Jr.

kicked off the festivities, enjoying a bowl full
of home-made huckleberry ice cream before
introducing each of this year's Rotary
scholarship recipients. Each student presented a
synopsis of their background and experience, as
well as their hopes for the future.
Their plans ranged the gamut from careers in the
performing arts and humanities, to clothing
design to becoming health care professionals.
One thing each had in common was their desire to
continue their education.
Sara, the daughter of Debi Owinyo, is planning
to attend The Master's College in Santa Clarita,
California, to pursue her career goal of
teaching music and languages and to sing
professionally.
She was a 2011 qualifier for the Vocal State
solo competition, a nine-year member of the
Bonners Ferry Children's Choir, a two-year
member of the Idaho All-State Treble Choir and
the All-Northwest Treble Choir, and she's
performed throughout the community at events
including Shriner's meetings, Masonic meetings,
dinners, holiday events and for the Bonners
Ferry Rotary Club.
She's been an Earth Day volunteer, she was
winner of last year's Junior Miss competition
and she's Valedictorian of the Bonners Ferry
High School Class of 2011. She works at Gabby
Goose Day Care.

McClintock and president-elect Wilma DeVore
spoke of the Rotary Club International and the
Bonners Ferry Rotary. |
