Henry
Smuland, 94, passed away at his residence near
Bonners Ferry, Idaho, on April 18, 2011.
Henry Smuland (April 15, 1917- April 18, 2011)
was born in a 17-foot by 27-foot log house in
Kater, 60 miles from North Battleford,
Saskatchewan, Canada. His father, Gottlieb
Schmuland, was born of Russian descent and his
mother Natalia (Zelmer) Schmuland had a Russian
mother and a Polish father. His sister, Adele,
and brothers Reinhart and Benjamin were also
born in the same one room house.
Henry is survived by his sister Adele and
brothers Dan and Oscar.
Graduated from Otterburne Bible College and
began his pastoral ministry, Henry began his
pastoral ministry three years before graduation
from North American Baptist Seminary, Rochester
New York. Shortly after starting his pastoral
duties and a new family, he returned to Yankton
College to finish his Bachelors Degree in Social
Service.
Henry was pastor for 21 years and he took a
calling as a parole and probation officer for an
additional 20 years in Oregon.
He is survived by his loving wife Elma Smuland,
and daughters Donna, Corinne and Brenda. Henry
has 7 grand kids and five great grand children.
He chose to make the Pacific Northwest his final
resting place.
Funeral service will be held at the Towne Center
Baptist Church in Happy Valley, Oregon, and
graveside service at Skyline Memorial Cemetery
and Park in Portland, Oregon.
