Retired firefighter fighting biggest battle
October 25, 2017
George Gemind retired four years ago after a near 30-year career as a fireman with the City of Glendale, California. He has spent his entire life serving his community.

After he retired, he and his bride of 32 years moved to Bonners Ferry, where George and Kathy built their dream home together. They became established in the community and their church.

George started feeling a pain in his side a few months ago, but being the manly man he is, he just thought he pulled a muscle. But the pain didn't go away and he couldn't get rid of the constant cough he had.

A few weeks ago, he finally went to the doctor and learned he has Stage 4 lung cancer, and it's spread to different parts of his body.

This all came as a complete shock to both George and Kathy. The treatment George needs is very expensive and is not covered by his insurance.

But he and Kathy aren't facing the fight alone. Last week, Lisa Myers set up a donation account on YouCaring.com. Greg Godfrey, assistant chief for Spokane County Fire District 8, once worked with George in Glendale, and he and other fire fighters, family and friends, both old friends in Glendale and new friends in Boundary County, have rallied around to help.

As of this morning, $8,665 has been raised of the $60,000 goal needed by November 12.

"We are overwhelmed, humbled, and thankful for each and everyone of you," Kathy wrote. "Every phone call, every visit, every contribution, and every prayer penetrates our hearts more than we can say. Our desire is that you know that we believe our God is good. All the time. And we want nothing more than for God to be glorified in this trial before us."
