Government Peak Recreation Area Chalet is opening January 4.
The opening is about six to seven months ahead of schedule, so
the Mat Su Borough is looking for creative ways to keep it open
to the public this winter without having the staff, or the
budget to do so.
They have asked Valley Mountain Bikers and Hikers to spread the
word that they need volunteers to watch over the building on
weekends in January, February and March.
The new building is 4,000 square feet and includes changing
rooms, rest rooms, a kitchen, which won’t open until next
summer, and a 2,300 square foot great-room with tables and
chairs.
Volunteer "chalet hosts" will open the building, keep the space
clean, sweep up and shovel near doors when needed, then close
the building in the evening. The chalet will be open from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m., so volunteers are needed to work four hour slots
– 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. each Saturday and
Sunday beginning January 4 and ending March 30.
Any volunteer working eight hours or more will be given a free
MSB Park Pass for 2014. A Google calendar is being created so
prospective volunteers can see what slots need filling. The
Borough expects to have the calendar ready in a week or two.
Until then you can call or email Jill Irsik at the MSB Parks &
Recreation Division, (907) 745-9578 to find out what time slots
are available and to volunteer. Her email is
