Palmer stench may stick around
|
December 3, 2013 |
Palmer dispatchers received several calls last night about a
terrible burning smell near the State Fairgrounds on South
Chugach Street in the Springer Loop area, but fire crews were
initially unable to pinpoint the source.
Dispatchers confirmed today that there is a smoldering
underground fire at Alaska Demolition on Rebarchek. It will
continue to burn and smell for a bit, but the fire trucks have
cleared the area. Dispatch was unclear how the fire started and
whether or not it began from a planned pile burn.
"I encourage everyone in the Matsu that smells that awful
burning smell to call the City of Palmer this morning," Mat-Su
Bourough Assemblyman Matthew Beck posted on his Facebook site.
"It is a fire at the monofill site that is located on the Alaska
State Fairgrounds. We have been smelling it since last night and
now the toxic smoke is filling the entire Valley. That is NOT
fog." |
