Mail being stolen in Moyie area

February 2, 2013
A mail carrier in the Moyie Springs area received complaints from residents on her route over the past few weeks that expected mail and packages hadn't arrived.

She found out what's happening, the mail is being stolen.

On Friday, she said, she found an opened package in the middle of Lynx Road she'd delivered to the addressee the day before, contents gone. This morning, she said she found a handful of mail belonging to at least six different people from Moyie Springs and Troy, Montana.

The only two items that had been opened, she said, were a birthday card and a credit application.

Mail theft is a federal offense that can carry stiff penalties, and the Moyie Springs Post Office has notified both the sheriffs office and federal authorities.

They ask everyone to be on the lookout for anyone suspicious, and remind everyone to pick up their mail daily, as soon after delivery as possible, especially if you receive checks or packages through the mail.

Anyone with information that might help authorities capture whoever is responsible should call the Boundary County Sheriff's Office, (208) 267-3151, extension 0.
