Rich Carlson passes

August 18, 2012
We are saddened to learn that life-long Bonners Ferry resident Rich Carlson lost his battle against pancreatic cancer in Coeur d'Alene on Friday, August 17.

He'd been diagnosed with the disease last September, when he was given three to six months to live. Service information will be posted when it becomes available.

Carlson, long a part of Boy Scouting in Boundary County and a firearms instructor here for many years, worked as an agent for U.S. Customs and Border Patrol up to his death, and even while battling cancer, he rarely ever took a sick day and he refused to quit.

Last month, fellow agents announced plans for a fundraiser on behalf of the Carlson family, who for the past several months have traveled weekly to a medical facility near Seattle, where he was undergoing an experimental treatment regimen after all traditional treatments had been tried.

Despite Rich's passing, that benefit will go on September 15 as planned, with all proceeds going to Carlson's wife, Nancy. Tickets for a donated shotgun and rifle to be raffled off during the fundraiser are being sold at the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol booth at the Boundary County Fair.
