Flood warning issued on Kootenai

June 24, 2012
The Spokane office of the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for the Kootenai River at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, to last through Friday, June 29.

With Libby Dam increasing outflow and more heavy rain expected Tuesday, the river is expected reach flood stage Monday morning and rise to 64.2 feet by Monday afternoon. As of 4:15 p.m. Sunday, the river level at Bonners Ferry was 63.83 feet; flood stage is 64 feet.

Expected rainfall in the coming week could cause slight rises in water levels on the Moyie, Yaak and Fisher Rivers.

Those who own property along the river should keep an eye out for potential problems, and boaters on the Kootenai are warned to keep an eye out for large debris, which can break free hen river levels are high.

When the river level reaches 64 feet, minor flooding of agricultural lands is likely and seepage is also likely.
