For as far back as they can remember, Cliff
Kroeger has had a male boxer named Major. At
nearly every call Cliff responded to as Bonners
Ferry's long-serving fire chief, Major was there
with him.
Cliff's granddaughter, Sabrina Winey, was
carrying on the tradition when she bought a male
boxer a few months ago and named him Major. The
family fell in love with him, as did Cliff, who
spent considerable time with the pup.
That's why the family was devastated when Major
disappeared Thursday, May 31, from his Paradise
Valley home. As the days dragged on, the family
went so far as to offer a reward, but more days
went by and the family was losing hope.
"I just figured someone took him and we'd never
see him again," Sabrina said.
As it turned out, someone did take him. A
Sandpoint couple, looking at property next door
to the Winey home, thought Major was lost and
starving when he walked up to them, friendly as
could be. They knocked on the Winey's door, but
no one was home at the time.
Thinking he was a stray, the couple loaded Major
up and took him home, where they fed him and
took good care of major.
While they thought they might have a new pet,
the two were concerned that the beautiful
seven-month-old boy had a family that loved him,
and when a co-worker saw a lost-dog poster at a
grocery store bearing a picture that bore a
remarkable likeness to the dog they'd found, she
called the number right away, and Sabrina
described Major to a tee.
Though it as with heavy heart, the couple who'd
found and taken care of him for a week and a day
loaded Major back up for a ride back to Paradise
Valley and a happy reunion with his rightful
owners.
"Thank goodness for honest people," Sabrina
said. After chatting for awhile, it turns out
the story might actually have a happy ending for
everyone involved.
"They might just end up being our new
neighbors," Sabrina said. "Crazy!" |
