PHD hosting free teen dental party

May 15, 2012
Panhandle Health District will give teens from low-income families residing in Bonner and Boundary counties protection for their teeth and more at a dental party May 31 at the Sandpoint Teen Center, 104 S. Division Ave. in Sandpoint.

PHD dental hygienists will provide screenings, fluoride varnish, dental sealants, referrals and education at no cost. These combined services typically cost as much as $400.

PHD has asked local dentists to participate by donating vouchers for dental cleanings and cavity fillings for teens who need follow-up care.

Dental sealants are a plastic material that is painted onto the chewing surfaces of permanent molar teeth. The sealants reduce the risk of cavities occurring on the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

Fluoride varnish is a liquid coating applied to the teeth with a brush. It dries instantly and provides a protective coating of fluoride that’s released over several months. The fluoride strengthens teeth and helps prevent decay.

The dental party will include healthy snacks, door prizes and free dental supplies. Teens who attended dental parties in Kootenai County told their school nurse that the event was fun and made them feel special with all the extras that were provided.

The Sandpoint Teen Center dental party is scheduled from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 31.

A signature of consent for treatment by a parent or guardian is required. Consent forms will be available at the dental party or can be obtained in advance by calling (208) 415-5143.

Appointments are required. Call (208) 415-5143 by 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, for an appointment.
