Idaho solider killed in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense today announced the death of Army Sergeant Daniel J. Brown, 27, Jerome, Idaho, killed when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

Colonel Tim Marsano, public affairs officer for the Idaho National Guard, said the family has requested privacy.

Brown died Saturday, March 24, in an attack on his unit, the 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, was attacked while on patrol in Kandahar Province. The 4th Infantry Division is based in Fort Carson, Colorado.

While he was an active duty soldier, the Idaho National Guard is assisting the family, including his wife, Jordan Brown, three month old twin daughters Mattie and Marlee, brother Matt, parents Becky and Jerry Brown and grandparents Lee and Barbara Urie.

Through Colonel Marsano, the family released the following statement,

"Dan will be missed by his family and friends. He loved the company of others and was a friend to everyone he knew, because he always put others before himself. The was especially true of his brother, Matt. Dan felt a call to join the Army after the events of 9/11. He was a leader who took his role seriously and led by example. Dan was also very athletic and loved football and baseball. For his Jerome High School senior project, he began a mentoring program to help younger kids excel at baseball."
