County P&Z  closing in on ordinance
June 23, 2011
After years of effort, the nine volunteers on the Boundary County Planning and Zoning Commission appear to be on the cusp of forwarding to County Commissioners their recommendation of what this county's next Zoning and Subdivision Ordinance should be.

The pain is spread across the board ... but agreement on the text of the document is nearly reached, county attorneys, on initial review, are of the opinion that the amendments comply with state and federal law, and it may well be that the work the citizens of this community put forth in wrtiting a comprehensive plan might soon be codified into law.

The majority of the volunteers on the County P&Z commission have met in weekly public sessions, on their own dime, in a best attempt to to find a balance that will serve the unique charachter of this place we all call home. They recognize that Boundary County is a unique place in that property rights are respected, but that some rules have to apply.

"Writing law, particularly land use law," Weland said, "is always divisive. I'm proud to be working with the members of this planning and zoning commission, because I think they're bringing everything they know into the process."

Due to schedules, the county Planning and Zoning Commission is going to take a week off.

Once P&Z finshes the edit, all will go to public hearing before the board of county commissioners, the amended draft will be published on the county website and any additional concerns will be heard.

If all works out, that could happen as early as mid-August.
