Globetrotter coming to Swish!

June 1, 2011
Seth Franco, a former Harlem Globetrotter and inspiring preacher, is going to add a level of excitement unimagined in the history of the Bonners Ferry Swish.
For all you old has-beens and hopefuls, competition at this year's Bonners Ferry Swish, coming up July 16, just got a whole lot tougher.

A former Harlem Globetrotter is going to be in the crowd. A still caucasion former Harlem Globetrotter, one married to a Bonners Ferry girl.

The first still caucasion white person skilled enough and soulful enough to play with the most storied, most greatest, bestest, funest and funniest "black" basketball team in the world since 1942. That is rarefied air, indeed!

Wilt "The Stilt" Chamberlin played with the Harlem Globetrotters. So did Meadowlark Lemon and Curley Neal. Not only exceptional basketball players, all members of the team were and are ambassadors to the beauty of basketball on a global scale, international harbingers of neighborliness. No way possible to see a Harlem Globetrotters game without liking who they are or what they represent ... not with those boldly proud Red, White and Blue uniforms.

In 2003, Seth Franco, who'd played for the Court Jesters and the Harlem Wizards, ascended to the ultimate in the basketball hierachy, donning the uniform and striding onto the court to the tune of "Sweet Georgia Brown."  As a Harlem Globetrotter, he traveled the world, until he met and married registered nurse Sarah Parlow, November 17, 2004, the daughter of Jim and Margaret Parlow, both hard-working stalwarts in Boundary County who recently served a mission in the Ukraine, and sister of Don Parlow, a law enforcement officer who learned his skills and earned his credentials here.

In the seventh grade, Seth wrote an essay, that he wanted to be a professional basketball player and a preacher one day.

He is living that dream, giving up the glory of being a rare member of an illustrious team to turn his devotion to the ministry. But don't think that means his basketball skills have rusted!

Seth and his family, now including a beautiful little girl, Jade Evelyn, now travel the country, combining unreal basketball skills with the message of salvation.

He is coming to sink hoops and save souls, and he's coming to his wife's home town. This is going to be a formidable experience for all who attend. I'm working now to buy up the tissue market ... I think we're going to need it.

Brochures and registration packet for the July 16-17, 2011, Bonners Ferry SWISH can be accessed through the event's website, www.bfswish.com, or through the Rotary website, www.bonnersferryrotary.com. Come on! You know you want to face off with the best of the best! Regardless of your skill level or age, it's going to be fun, inspirational and educational.
