Coldest, longest spring on record

April 22, 2011

Residents in many parts of Boundary County woke up this morning to something you normally don't expect to see just one week from May, snow. And it very well looks like today might be a record breaker. In the 130 years weather records have been kept, the latest date recorded for reaching 60-degrees is April 22.

And it doesn't look like we're going to reach that mark. Spokane hit 59-degrees March 31, but that's the closest we've been. In Boundary County, we're expecting a high today of 50-degrees.

On a positive note, the National Weather Service predicts a nice, sunny if not quite warm weekend in Bonners Ferry for all the Easter Egg hunts and the many activities going on this weekend, and, if they're correct, we could snap the coldest spring record on Sunday, April 24, with a temperature of 61 degrees.

But once the weekend's over, it appears, we drop back into a weather pattern similar to what we've been contending with for what seems like forever, gray skies, rain and maybe even more snow, with overnight lows dipping into the low to mid 30s and day-time highs in the low 50s.

On April 18, the lowest temperature for the date was broken at Mullan Pass, with a low of 19-degrees. The previous record of 20-degrees was set in 1941.

Drexel Love, Moyie Springs, was up early taking pictures, including the one on this page.

"By the time I got enough nerve to go out in the rain, most of the snow was melted," she said. "Even we can't have snow at the end of April?! It is supposed to get nice by Sunday. Oh, wait ... they said that last week, too. Have a great Easter!"
