Extracurricular activities essential to students

April 16, 2011
Dear Editor:

If any one has any doubt if our school sports programs contribute to successful adults out there in the world, they only have to look at the front page of this week’s Bonners Ferry Herald.

Here are two fine examples of Bonners Ferry high school athletes who have gone on to successful college careers, maintaining good grades and enjoying success beyond high school, in their sport of choice. They did not do this without a lot of hard work and discipline, which they certainly learned while participating in Bonners Ferry High School sports programs.

Scholarships enabled them to further their education. I can guarantee you that Adam Hall and Adam Hiatt would surely not be where they are today if we had not passed M&O levies to keep our sports programs available, when they attended BFHS. They are but two of our community’s many success stories.

Sports programs are not a luxury. Not only do they contribute to the fitness, health and discipline of our youth, they can and do lead to opportunities that might not otherwise be available for kids from a small town in a time of recession and increasing college tuition rates.

It is expensive to pursue a higher education and those student-athletes who have worked hard, in both their studies and their sports programs, can open doors that might otherwise be closed. As for the families of non-athletes who resent paying for these sports programs, you are still investing in your own futures – the future or your community, your country and your world. And I will not resent you if your non-athlete student chooses to apply for loans, grants and other tax-based entitlement programs, whether it be for attending college or otherwise.

Every student may not be an athlete, but every one of our kids should be able to combine our community support with their own drive and initiative to create a secure and successful future for themselves.

Congratulations to Mr. Hiatt and Mr. Hall. You make Bonners Ferry proud. Let’s all ensure that these same opportunities are available to our current and future students.

Thank you.
