Discoveries
are often made by not following instructions; by
going off the main road; by trying the untried.”
-Frank Tyger-
Fall and sweet soft rains (and a lot of fog)
prep our county for winter.
Tomato plants which have served us so well try
their best to produce one or two more before
being yanked without ceremony from the ground.
Pine needles? Does anyone need some? Make for
great mulch and all you have to do is come to my
place and rake, rake, rake, rake ….and rake some
more.
Next time you’re at Mario’s go out back and
check out his pair of jumbo Koi.
Nothing is sweeter to me than seeing our Badger
team win the annual homecoming game …. And then
there were those who said we could not beat
Moscow. Oh ye of no faith.
Gee, just read where Ms. Palin is not planning
on running for President this go around. Darn
it! She looked great toting an over and under in
that patriotic red, white, and blue bathing
suit.
Heartburn: Why is it we see/hear about defense
and medical care being “on the table” for
possible federal cuts and we’ve yet to hear or
read about foreign aid being given a serious
once over?
What are we paying these people for?
Go ahead … label me an isolationist.
While I’m fuming about foreign aid, allow me to
throw another wrench into the works … You want
our soldiers in your country? You can rent them
for a reasonable fee.
Is it just me, or do you also sense our
mini-undeclared-wars seem to go on forever?
Seems to this old curmudgeon we should focus our
collective efforts on helping one another before
… reaching out to save the world.
Bible school even told us to help ourselves so
we could help others.
If you really want to do something nice for
yourself, and help others while you’re at it;
call or otherwise make contact with old friends
from your past … it is always refreshing to go
back in time and recall fun (and sometimes dumb)
things you shared with old friends.
Since I’m really just rambling along now I had
better quit while ahead. Take care of yourself
so you can take care of others.
(Uncle Bud is likely going to resent my
intrustion here, but because few people comment
on his posts, he fears he's lost touch and his
writing means little any more ... it's the
affliction of the Old Soldier.
Uncle Bud has been more places, raised more
toasts, done more and seen more in more places
than most of us, even military veterans, can
imagine. He stayed with it, through the dark
days, and helped lead the U.S. Army to become
what it is ... a group of mostly young people in
whom we take pride, even when we question the
motives of their leaders.
Not many enlisted veterans plant each step right
every step of the way to earn the stripes of
Command Sergeant Major. Not many retired Command
Sergeant's Major come to call Boundary County
home, or spend years their retirement years
writing about the wonders and foibles of this
place as well as he has.
Along with Lon Woodbury and
www.ruralnorthwest.com, we ushered in an
entirely new media, a media that may, if it's
ever accepted, come to rival newspaper, radio or
television.
That he's let me have the privilege of posting
his words on my meager site is, to me, an honor.
That he complains about the price of peanut
butter going up tells me that he has the pulse
of the nation at his fingertips.
If you've read this far,
to send him an email. Let him know that
you're reading, and that you're thinking about
him ... better yet, get into an argument.
As his long-time editor, he and I have had
several arguments, mostly involving commas, and
I've always had a tough time bringing such
trivia to his attention, having never risen in
the military above the rank of buck sergeant, of
being placed in such a position of authority
over someone so obviously my better.
I've been blessed to have been in a position to
put his words out where people can read them. |
