Elk tags in capped zones going on sale soon
June 14, 2017

Resident hunters wanting to purchase a general season elk tag in a "capped" zone will want to review this year’s seasons and rules booklet for changes on how tags will be sold in July.

All resident capped elk zone tags, except for the Sawtooth Zone, go on sale at 9 a.m. July 10 at Fish and Game offices, license vendors, or with a credit card by going online to https://idfg.idaho.gov, or by calling (800) 554-8685.

Due to high demand, resident Sawtooth Zone A and B elk tags will go on sale July 12 (two days after other resident tags), with half of the tags sold at license vendors only starting at 9 a.m. The remaining half of the resident Sawtooth tags will go on sale online only at noon.

The capped zone tags are sold over-the-counter on a first-come, first-served basis. Demand for these tags is high, and many are expected to sell fast.

Fish and Game officials adjusted the sale of the capped zone tags to give equal access for in-person sales at vendors and those who prefer to buy tags online.

“Last year, resident Sawtooth Zone A and B tags sold out in less than an hour,” said Michael Pearson, Fish and Game administration bureau chief. “We’ve changed the sale in attempts to allocate the tags in a more equitable way for hunters, but there will likely be higher demand than tags available.”

License and tag buyers who purchase online are reminded that Fish and Game added security measures, which require the buyer to establish a unique account with a user name and password. Before tags go on sale, hunters are also encouraged to buy their hunting license, set up their online account in advance and remember their password.

For current information about how many of each of the capped zone tags are available, go to https://idfg.idaho.gov and click on the “Elk Tag Quotas” under the “Licenses” tab.
