Badger baseball splits home opener with Lake City JV |

by Tom Turpin BFHS Head Baseball Coach The Badger baseball team split its home opener doubleheader last Thursday with Lake City JV, the Badgers losing the first game 12-4, but then coming back to earn the split with an 11-3 win. The Badgers record improves to 3-2 in the early season. GAME 1: BADGERS – 4 WOLVES – 12 The Badgers scored first in the bottom of the 2nd inning after Caleb Blackmore walked with one out and later scored on an error from the Lake City shortstop. In the top of the 4th inning, pitcher Nick Sabin allowed 7 runs on 3 walks and 3 hits allowing the Wolves to take a 7-1 lead. The Badgers responded with 3 runs in the bottom half of the 4th after Blackmore, Triston Howell and Jesse Dunham all walked. Brady Bateman then hit a 2 run single to score Blackmore and Howell. Dunham later scored on a passed ball. The Wolves added 5 more runs to secure the win. Vince Bennett pitched effectively the first 3 innings allowing only one hit, striking out 6 and no walks. GAME 2: BADGERS – 11 WOLVES – 3 Bonners Ferry came out swinging in the 2nd game, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the first to cruise to a 11-3 win. After the Wolves scored 1 run in the top half of the first inning, the Badgers responded with 4 runs on 2 hits. Jesse Dunham started the inning off with a walk and Brady Bateman hit a single to put 2 runners on base. Shay Garcia and Steve Anzalone both walked which scored Dunham. Bateman scored after Nick Sabin was hit by a pitch. After a steal home from Garcia, Chris Sabin then hit a RBI single to score Anzalone. In the bottom of the 2nd, Dunham hit a single to start the inning and Bateman reached on an error. Garcia then laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Dunham and Bateman scored on a 2 run single from Anzalone. After the Wolves scored one run in the top of the 3rd inning, the Badgers added 5 more runs on 4 hits to make the score 11 – 2. The Wolves added one more run in the 4th inning for the final 11-3 Badger win. Jesse Dunham pitched 4 innings, giving up 4 hits, striking out 4 and walking only one batter. Steve Anzalone came in relief and pitched 2 innings striking out 3 while walking just 2 batters. The Badgers collected 10 hits in the game with Dunham going 3 for 3 and Shay Garcia and Chris Sabin each collecting 2 hits. The Badgers will host their annual Spring tournament this coming Friday & Saturday, March 27 and 28. Come cheer on the Badger Baseball team! |
