Badger runners perform well
at meets in Kellogg, Coeur d'Alene |
September 16, 2014 |
The BFHS Cross Country team had a busy week last
week, running two races in three days. The team
began by running at Kellogg at Pinehurst Golf
Course, a notoriously fast race, on Thursday,
September 11, and again at Coeur d’Alene’s hilly
Hayden Canyon for the Super 1 Invitational on
Saturday, September 13. The busy Badgers battled
long distance travel and fatigue to post great
times, including many personal bests.
At Kellogg on Thursday, Senior Jacob Perkins
sacrificed the opportunity to medal and a
potential place on the podium in order to help
his teammates. By pacing Tucker Cavender, Alva
Swanson, and Jack Wade, Perkins helped his
teammates realize their potential. Tucker ran
19:11, his best time this season while Jacob
finished right behind him. Junior Alva Swanson,
after running with Cavender and Perkins most of
the race, finished in 19:25. Junior Nolan
Stidham rallied late to move up and post a
20:10. First year runner Jack Wade finished in
20:46. Eric Ellis was not far behind at 21:02.
Dawson Thomas rounded out the boys’ varsity
squad by posting a 21:34. Paul Ryan of Logos
posted a 15:58 and beat the second place runner
by almost 2 minutes. The boys team finished 3rd
in team scoring.
The boys JV race saw freshmen runners working
hard to post personal bests. Freshman Neil
Martin battled from the middle of the pack to
challenge Immaculate Conception Academy’s Morgan
Earp for first place. Martin ended up winning
the duel, finishing in 20:59, while Earp
finished second in 21:15. Nick Magdaleno
finished in 8th place, posting a 23:28. Will
Colson ran with Nick most of the way, finishing
just behind him at 23:39. Andrew McCoy made key
moves towards the end of the race, passing
several runners on his way to a 26:57 finish.
In the women’s varsity race, Kootenai and Logos
runners claimed first and second handily, coming
in at 21:14 and 21:27, but Nicole Donn had to
fight to claim 3rd on the last two steps of the
race. Donn ran a personal best of 23:06.
Victoria Smith and Amanda Bauer ran close to
each other most of the race, with Smith
finishing in 26:00 and Bauer in 26:49. Junior
Hannah Lysne came in at 27:26.
Just two days later, the Badgers found
themselves back at the Hayden Canyon course,
where they ran the previous week at the Coeur
d’Alene Jamboree. This time, Perkins paced
himself well enough for an 11th place finish in
the small schools division with a time of 17:40,
his best time this season. The next Badger,
Tucker Cavender, had to fend off Timberlake’s
Jordan Hardy all the way to the last step.
Tucker finished 28th with 19:14.5 while Hardy
came in at 19:14.8. Every step counts. Alva
Swanson was right behind them with a season best
19:20 for 5k. After Swanson, Nolan Stidham
finished 19:48, and Jack Wade finished in 20:39.
Eric Ellis finished in 20:54 and Dawson Thomas
came in at 21:25.
In the ladies small school race, Nicole Donn
continued to impress with a 15th place finish
and a time of 23:16. After three solid races in
a row, coaches are seeing her start to put
racing pieces together. “She’s got great talent,
now she just needs to continue building on her
fitness and add the mental elements to keep
improving,” said assistant coach Mike Tymrak.
Also performing well was first year runner
Victoria Smith, who finished in 26:04. Hannah
Lysne and Amanda Bauer finished together in
27:47 and 27:50 respectively.
The busy Badgers next meet will be at Plantes
Ferry in Spokane on Saturday, September 20. High
School races start at around noon. On Thursday
9/18 the middle school will be hosting a meet at
4:00 p.m. at the District II softball fields.
