It sure has been a busy week for the Badger
softball team! With seven games in the past six
days they have earned a well-deserved day of
rest on Sunday.
The week began with a home-opener against the
hard hitting Libby Loggers. Senior MaKenzie
Carle took the mound and accumulated four
strikeouts in the 4-15 loss on Monday.
Highlights of the day included doubles from
Carle and Junior Mariah Rae while junior Zoe
Zielinski went 2 for 3 on the day.
Tuesday brought Newport High School all the way
from Washington for another beautiful day of
softball. Freshman Nicole Donn worked for three
strikeouts in the 8-7 win. With four Badgers
going 2 for 4 on the day: Avery Lane, Chantelle
Coon, Mariah Rae and Serenity Winey who also
knocked in a standup triple. The game was tied
7-7 in the bottom of the seventh when Bonner's
Ferry managed to get bases loaded with one out.
Senior Brianna Reasoner confidently came up to
the plate, ready to hit, only to get hit
herself, walking in the game winning run.
Thursday the ladies traveled to Troy, Montana,
to take on the Trojans. Nicole Donn pitched with
Brianna Reasoner behind the plate.
In a stellar outing, the Badgers racked up 21
points in the first five innings led by Chloe
Copley who went 5 for 5 on the day with a triple
in the second inning. Following closely behind
her lead, Serenity Winey went 4 for 5, Nicole
Donn went 3 for 5 with a double, Avery Lane went
3 for 6 and Arista Winey stepped in going 1 for
2. Donn sat down six girls for strikeouts,
allowing 6 runs on 5 hits.
The Badgers counted a 21-6 win.
Friday the JV along with most of the Varsity
team headed down to Priest River for a
doubleheader. In the first game Serenity Winey
took the helm earning two strikeouts with Gabby
Blackmore catching. Blackmore also stood out on
offense, going 2 for 3 with a triple. The JV
game agreement limited each inning to a 5 inning
cap, holding the game to a 10-5 loss for the
Badgers.
The second JV game Friday saw Chloe Copley on
the mound with Sam Schneider catching. Copley
got four K's while offensively shining going 2
for 2 with a triple. Arista Winey also had a
double. The Badgers broke down on defense,
allowing 19 runs and thus ending the game 7-19.
To round out the week, the Varsity welcomed
Priest River's Varsity to their home field on
Saturday for another perfect day for softball.
The first game didn't go as planned, with the
Badgers falling 5-20 after six innings. Nicole
Donn took the loss. Blackmore went 2 for 4 with
a double and Carle added a double in the loss.
The final, seventh game of the week yielded much
better competition. Senior MaKenzie Carle owned
the mound, claiming 10 of the first 11 outs for
herself. By the end of the day she had eight
strikeouts and was involved in 13 outs.
Carle also worked the plate on offense, going 3
for 4 with a double, backed up by Nicole Donn
who went 2 for 4 with a double and Zoe Zielinski
who was 1 for 1 with 3 walks. Despite a
hard-fought effort, the Badgers fell in a 12-14
loss.
A long week of softball, ended with a 2-5 record
on the week, and a Varsity record of 3-6 with a
JV record of 1-3.
Next week they have a repeat schedule with
either a Varsity or JV game every day of the
week except for Wednesday. Come cheer them on at
home Tuesday against Kellogg at 4 p.m. or
Saturday at their doubleheader against
Timberlake starting at 11 a.m. |
