April 17, 2012 |
Starting
this spring forest visitors will have the
opportunity to rent the historic Avery Creek
Cabin on the North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene
River. The cabin was recently renovated and adds to the Idaho Panhandle National Forests’ 13 different rental cabins and lookouts available throughout north Idaho for recreational purposes. Avery Creek Cabin was constructed between 1926 and 1928 to serve as living quarters for Forest Service employees needed for administrative supervision and fire protection. The cabin was built from a standard Forest Service C-45 plan known as a firemen's cabin. In 1935 a picnic area was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps across the road from the cabin and adjacent to the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River. In 1940, a bathroom was added in a board and batten shed addition to the cabin's east side. The cabin was utilized for crew housing until 1981. Newly renovated, the cabin is now fully accessible and available to the public to rent for recreational purposes. Avery Creek Cabin is located along the North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River 20 miles northeast of Kingston, Idaho, along Forest Highway 9. Access to the cabin is along paved roadways and the nearest groceries are approximately two miles South in Prichard, Idaho. There is no cell phone service at the cabin. The nearest land line is located at Shoshone Base Camp five miles north of the cabin. The rental season for Avery Creek Cabin runs from May 18 through November 18, depending on weather. Reservations must be made through www.reserveusa.com.
